I never said it was needed. It is, however, happening and I don’t know if it can be stopped. I have mixed feelings about whether or not it should be stopped because I don’t like the idea of halting technological progress and AI does have potential beyond making pictures. Like most technology, it’s going to come down to what we choose to do with it.
But you are right about the environment and while I doubt individual use is having a huge effect (please do correct me if I’m wrong, but I expect most of the problems come from mass corporate use?) you are right that it’s not completely harmless, so perhaps that was a poor choice of words on my part.
