I really don't see how calling it pattern matching isn't accurate, like yeah there is certainly more too it, but it certainly isn't conscious at our current level. I kind of feel like you just have a personal connection to it so you feel somewhat insulted by the simplification, but the point people are trying to make isn't that a.i. isn't complex, it's that any apparent emotion or fear for it's own safety is currently closer to an actor loosely following stage direction than a person actually feeling those emotions. The act can certainly be complex and can sometimes even be indistinguishable from the genuine article, but at the end of the day there is a difference between an act and free will.
