In a broader context, what Google is tackling here is a big problem in machine learning: That the environment changes. Take gender biases: I would hope most would agree that some gender baises are biological, some are social. Which are which is a though problem, but culture changes over time. We're definitely moving towards a world in which womans roles are changing, even if you don't like it, or think that we're over-writing biologically "natural" thing by way of social biases instead. Fact of the matter is, the role of (for example) woman in society is changing.
This means that if you train a model on the past (what else would you train on?) it becomes unfit for the future. Because the world isn't static.
