Is that right? Maybe, maybe not, but that's reality. I believe in a meritocracy, where the most deserving for the job, gets the job. Why are women over-represented in nursing? Is it possibly because they are genetically disposed to far higher levels of compassion? Which in turn makes them far abler nurses? However, there are males with greater degrees of compassion than that of the average male who, in turn, make great nurses, just like Marie Curie was an outstanding physicist. Is this wrong? Unfair? Perhaps, but let me tell you what I believe to be by far the most unfair. Arbitrarily deciding that any difference in representation of gender, race, ethnicity are entirely the result of patriarchal oppression, and that, as a woman, you will never be allowed to succeed. You have installed the patriarchy into your own mind, to the extent that you believe you aren't allowed to get ahead, is to the extent that you're own self-imposed victimhood will stop you being successful in any field. It is far more expedient, and less hurtful however to blame personal failings on third party influences, rather than going internally to ask "how could I be better? Where can I improve? Maybe my degree in squirrel studies does not set me up for a career as an astrophysicist?". Call me sexist, racist bla bla bla - It's just rain these days, it bounces right off of me.
