Officers of U.S. public corporations have "a fiduciary duty" to "maximize shareholder value". CEOs can be fired for not doing so. For Demis Hassabis the pursuit of AI is all about science, but for corporations it will be all about replacing employees with AI agents and AI-enabled robots. Capitalism and the fiduciary duty requires this attempt to displace workers with technology -- even if it is obvious that slashing the labor force will decimate the consumer spending which underpins all for-profit entities. Capitalism as we've known it is now too simplistic to effectively sustain prosperity -- even for those on the top.
So a new, broader mandate is needed to augment the fiduciary duty of corporate officers, to ensure corporate activities are sustainable in all senses of that word. But governments are so corrupted by the rich and influential, who are financially incentivized to maintain the status quo (e.g. the proposed 10-year deferment of any AI regulation) or even slash existing government regulation.
