@khancockmusic and what about the billions of gallons of water that were already used in data centres before generative AI? What about the enormous amount of water that goes into semiconductor manufacturing? These are both hugely energy intensive too. This is the cost of progress, but now that everyone is used to having a phone, nobody's demanding TSMC shut down. There's enormous hidden costs to progress, but AI is hyper scrutinised. Basically all AI inference is still being done on general purpose data centre GPUs, there's a lot of low hanging fruit to optimise - Google have their own TPUs built specifically for these tasks and are able to undercut other providers because of this. Cerberus print entire LLMs on wafer-scale chips and make everything else look totally obsolete in terms of efficiency.
I'm not aware of anyone seriously replacing musicians with GenAI yet. You do have a point about writing, there's a lot of AI slop articles. But there still is, and always will be, value in human creativity.
