Quick two cents: an AI looks at its data set and sees patterns. It can replicate what has already been done and combine to create something new.
In any art form, visual art included, there is nearly always a message or emotion embedded in the work. Only architectuary or symbolic work lack this. An AI is quite far away from being able to understand why a piece of art was made and thus lacks the ability to convey its own meaning in anything it makes.
This makes actual artists far from obsolete because they can actually embed a story and emotion into their work.
