Art is scraped from non consenting artists across the internet to train the AI to produce what it thinks this art is supposed to look like. Without a constant stream of human made art, it wouldn’t be able to function. How exactly did you think AI was trained to create these images?? As for your point regarding fanart, I am baffled at how you’d come to that conclusion. Sure, it’s someone else’s character, but skill, time, energy, creativity, PASSION went into creating that fanart. There’s nothing stolen about it, it’s human made. It’s up to the characters creator if they mind people selling fanart. Ai art, on the other hand, requires no skill, and if you disagree and think that it does, alright, but there is no way it measures up to an artist’s skill. Art is a collection of skills that take time to learn, you have your observational skills, your ability to stylise, ability to understand form and perspective, whereas AI art is simply typing a prompt. So yes, real artists can ‘get away’ with profiting off their art that they created with the skills that they’ve learned. I don’t see how you think this is a double standard. I’m glad that you see that specifically prompting AI to replicate an artists style is wrong, and I appreciate that you explained your points to me in a fairly respectful manner. I really don’t like the intense viciousness and animosity between real artists and AI image generators, as an artist myself, AI art just upsets me very much. The reason AI art has developed so fast recently is because of how much art is now available online for the creators of these AI image generators to just steal to train their AI. This is just a fact, it’s how the programs are developed. It’s not like the AI can watch tutorials and study composition to learn to draw, it generates images based off what it’s fed, which is the scraped art that unsuspecting artists post online. We (as in artists) are offended and upset because it devalues our skills, time, and effort. Not because we hate people wanting to use something they see as fun and new.
