There are plenty of people working on inventions regarding AI that will actually improve quality of life.
Just some examples: the sorting of plastics to reduce cost in recycling, the automated rating of plants during breeding to increase their resistance to draught, material research, genomic and microbiotic research to combat disease in plants as well as humans.
There are literally thousands of such applications that are in development all over the world.
