Yeah I used to think (do I think?) that. We use terms like sentience, consciousness, the soul as if we know they exist. I can't prove someone else has those qualities and vice versa. His team adopted neural networks - which he admits he didn't invent - and stuck with it over the past forty years while others were promoting a rules-based approach. His team won out, to produce AI to understand speech - as used in Google & Apple - and the same technique applied to images. I think it has some way to go and he could be shot down in flames by a better interviewer on some points if they did their homework first, but lazy presenters just lap it all up as he is scarily smart.
