You think like an eight-year-old. AI was not built by one homogeneous, coherent, one "people". Many, many people over the course of decades contributed each in their own small way, with very few of them having even the slightest thought that one day many years later their accumulated knowledge and efforts MIGHT bring about an invention that MIGHT be an existential threat to humanity.
The way you think is that one day a bunch of people came together and decided they were going to build something that they knew would be an existential threat. That scenario is so infantile and unrealistic. The world works in much more complex ways.
