It gave them an endless source of artistic expression: something these artists failed to do for each other, merely copying the work of the AI and parroting each other. There are fewer ideas their work can possibly represent relative to the original piece.
Additionally, the original piece made more of an impact.
In short, it's a stronger piece of art. By responding to the art, not only by words and observations, but by producing things, they are directly ascribing it value.
