@brianmi40 It's overhyped because the general conversation these days is that AI will displace over 30% of our jobs, or we may never have to work again, or that AI will go rogue and become Skynet. CEOs and the news exaggerate the abilities of AI without respect to the limitations that AI has. AI depends on existing data and learns/replicates those patterns. But it isn't conscious, nor does it truly understand what it's even doing. It understands symbols and patterns that are extracted from training data and used to fine-tune the ANN. While AI is useful and will certainly change the way we work, it isn't some "sentient being" that is going to take over the entire workforce, or exterminate the human race.
CS graduates understand this. Talk to other CS grads, programmers, software developers, etc. and they will tell you AI is being overhyped by companies that need investors to survive. Me personally, I've been training AI for over a year, currently a year away from graduating with a degree in Computer Science, and I've made two AI models of my own. Not sure "living under a rock" is the way I would describe myself, but sure.
