Agreed with everything you said except less so the last sentence. The model currently being applied in my classes in university I feel are as good as it can get with one exception. Most of our grades are test based, about 70%-80% or so, and the rest is assignments. At this point the assignments are almost like freebies since 100% test based grading would be too extreme, and it's an open secret that everyone's using AI to some capacity to maximize their grade on the assignments.
However, since there is significant value in actually knowing the material and how to solve problems (because 70% or more of your grade is test based), there is incentive to engage with the assignments and use them as resources to study from since they are closest to what's on the tests.
Also AI is great for using the feynman method if your aim is to actually understand and retain a concept, but at times I find just asking a good TA is just as good if not better for logn term retention (as opposed to expedience).
The one caveat is that bad profs are no longer held accountable to their teaching ability since everyone just outsources to AI to teach them. It feels like lectures have gotten worse now that there's more reliance on AI/youtube, really devaluing the degree.
btw this is for a physics major but I've spoken to my engineering friends and they say this is exactly the case for them as well if not worse.
