I think Ezra did understand the premise, but he didn't think it was a compelling analogy because interacting with natural selection and interacting with an AI are two entirely different things. In other words, natural selection is incredibly far removed from the human experience and intelligence (if it even makes sense to call natural selection intelligent) whereas interacting with an AI is not so far removed, so it's tough to see how this analogy forms a strong argument.
