They actually didn't! These algorithms are almost akin to magic at the moment. From a birds-eye view it's like you have a machine composed of layers of random math; you roll billions of die it until it approximates the output you're looking for. You turn the input (words in this case) into numbers; run it through the machine and a reply comes out the other end. Why and how this works is actually still mysterious and being researched. They broadly know what is happening; but why the programs can do what they do is anyone's guess. Anthropic recently discovered that neurons form clusters for different concepts like lines and textures and objects. And all of that happens naturally; it's not something the programmers do deliberately.
