@patty190 Elon is looking years down the line as he always does. What the autopilot program is right now is just a training program for the AI to come. When it is finally ready for full autonomy I truly believe it will be safer than any human driver. We all drive with just our eyes. There is no reason a computer can't do it better with the proper training from the same visual information. Just a matter of time. Not using the Lidar is a move that is going to make this tech scalable to every car on the road. While it's not a super expensive sensor for 1 car multiply that by the millions of cars on the road. That cost would add up. This is the scale Elon is looking at when he says get rid of the Lidar.
