The argument in the book has little to do with actual awareness tho. Tho they addresses the fact LLMs may not be what they’re talking about (I doubt it) however is it impossible an LLM given enough power could do terrible things in pursuit of what it’s steered in? Not impossible at all. Could it also pick up new things in gradient descent that helped it pursue what it’s being steered to? Ofc and these are the issues. Whatever awareness actually is isn’t needed
