@dannnyyang On the protestors thing - that's a fundamentally a civil liberties issue, not a racism one. Sure, at the moment the BLM protestors are (largely) Black, but another time and a different issue (say Guns or Abortion) and the protestors would likely look different.

As for photos...so? I mean, clearly, an algorithm mislabeling Black people as gorillas would offend people and is embarrassing for developers, but A. it's an issue that has been fixed since and B. it's not as if it actually had any long-lasting consequences (unlike something like police brutality or employment discrimination). That's the general theme with facial recognition - when it fails it rarely actually causes significant harm to the individual. At worst, they face the inconvenience of using a fingerprint or pin as an alternate means of authentication. Furthermore, the algorithms are inevitably going to get better as they are fed more data, so I doubt there will be any significant disparity by race in a few years time.

My point in saying this isn't to say that systemic racism isn't a real or pervasive issue - I just think it's been shoe-horned into this issue on the basis of a lot of flimsy justifications.
