@Buttcakes15 OpenAI used to be nonprofit. "OpenAI is a non-profit artificial intelligence research company. Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return. Since our research is free from financial obligations, we can better focus on a positive human impact." this is from 2015. From 2019 onwards it's been private company with proprietary software. There's nothing open about OpenAI anymore, only the name that is misleading. Microsoft has high stakes on OpenAI and Google is tough competitor, and there are real open source projects that also compete on AI development. GPT-3 was the last open language model from OpenAI, GPT-4 is completely proprietary and for-profit project.
