Your analysis of the movie will be comforting whenever something goes wrong with an AI. By your looking at the trees rather than the forest, you might be missing the point. The blackmailing of an employee is HAL going crazy or the paper clip scenario. They let AI create societies in some of the games that are out there. There was good and bad and definitely some paperclip mania!
BTW, the ultimate goal is for AI to train other AI so things are faster. Some of the creators are already having trouble understanding all of its facets. Imagine when humans are barely in the loop!
