I think you're wrong - but the reason I think you're wrong is because I think people are even worse than that. What the ultra wealthy and ultra powerful crave is not stuff. I mean they do crave stuff, but thats not the primary craving, the primary craving is power. I think that has varying degrees of truth from person to person, but its broadly true and (importantly) its most true for those who are building this. What does Altman or Musk want? Stuff, or more power? They've got enough money to have all the stuff they could possibly want. What drives them is not the pursuit of more stuff. They want power, and to have power, you need peons to have power over. Power over a fleet of robots is not power, its more stuff. If it's the 1% we need to fear rather than AI itself, the ultimate risk is not extinction, it's slavery.
