Agreed. The truth is there is no safe job of any kind. The days of job security are over. It doesn't matter whether its white collar or blue collar jobs. And, as @factofitness3713 points out below corporations are ruthlessly cutting costs. This is true for any business operating in a capitalist economy. When the opportunity to cut costs appears they will take advantage of it in order to derive more profit.
AI simply allows these companies to take job tasks away. The really interesting feature of all of this change won't be the wave eliminations that people continue to envision on the horizon. It's when AI is able to replace engineers altogether. It will move up the chain if given the opportunity. Some would disagree with what I say but its about reducing common activities as much as possible. Thus, "job protection" suddenly becomes a great debate outside the world of unions. The coming years will be hard to predict.
