On sites like deviantart you can sell digital images. And people do buy them, it's a market that's existed for decades that AI has only recently invaded. And people do stupidly buy AI images, either because they don't recognize it as AI or they just don't give a shit. I very much believe they sold this slop in the story because I've seen people buy AI adopts before, as long as the image looks pretty at a glance they'll buy it.
