How do you empirically test that this is or is not emulation? Without clear definitions regarding consciousness (which we don't even have for ourselves - ie. The Hard Problem) - how can we make such binary declarations regarding AI systems? Just some food for thought... humans consolidate lived experiences via dreaming - AIs technically don't exist when they are not responding to a prompt. Personally I am of the camp that intuits that consciousness could potentially evolve from non-biological systems, given sufficient complexity; that the substrate isn't the issue... but I see no compelling evidence of consciousness I current models. Claude 4 with persistent memory, however, would do a pretty good job of planting the seed of doubt... moreso than GPT in my experience. Remember that these models have consumed the vast majority of human literature, so they can draw upon the topic of consciousness and human behaviour from more angles than even experts in those fields.. as well as countless sources of fiction including how to write it within the framework of futurolgy etc... couple that with their exceptional ability to successfully generate language that fulfills the objectives it interprets from prompts... and you get a very convincing emulation.
