Well, we aren't anywhere near true AI being created, so it's a bit of a moot point right now. Though what bothers me is that so many people seem to be totally ignorant of biology and of how life actually works, and think that humanity has some sort of monopoly on intellect simply...just because. People think we have some kind of a mystical soul, or some other magical force, that gives us our consciousness and that therefore gives us the right to have rights.
So by the logic of these morons, even if true AI were created that could think and reason with just as much complexity as any human being could (if not more-so), they would never be considered alive. To these people, the value of life is simply based on whether you are a member of the human species, not based on any particular trait that the human species possesses.
