The algorithm uses pictures to learn the pattern of a human face, if a picture is too dark or hasn't got enough lighting in it, the algorithm isn't able to use it. It is a problem of either
1. Black faces being hard to recognize for an algorithm or
2. The lighting isn't good enough, so the algorithm thinks that the face is just a dark background.
It has nothing to do with how many pictures you give the algorithm, you have to have samples with good lighting where patterns are recognizable without the distortion of the image that would occur if you'd turn up the gamma.
The algorithm is ONLY able to recognize the pattern of a face of whomever is standing in front of the camera, when it is able to see differences and contrast in a face. Black people do make it hard for the algorithm to see a pattern.
