It's arguable. We also have "purpose", and in many ways, not much different than it was 100,000 years ago. We want to stay alive, mate, live in comfort... we just have had many, many generations to create a complex social structure. A hypothetical sentient A.I. would develop much quicker, due to its digital nature, and the wealth of information it has access to.
Also, you have to understand, there is no such thing as a "soul" in science. It is a religious and philosophical concept. Maybe we all have one, but it's not a reasonable argument to present against sentient machines. People used to argue that since animals didn't have souls, it was okay to abuse and exploit them, for example. I assume you wouldn't agree, judging from the picture you're using.
