This thing called the economy is based on growth, and in most cases exponential, which is impossible on a finite planet, and even if it were somehow possible I still would consider it a stupid activity.
In any case I think that one should ask the question what this universal income will be mostly used for? Looks like for rent, interest, i.e. income without work. If you get rid of income without work, UBI will be much lower or maybe even not needed at all. I think an alternative to UBI would be free access to arable land, raw materials and means of production for everyone.
So it looks to me like UBI is just another attempt at keeping the commerce game going. The psychopaths in power just can't imagine or don't want a society not based on a framework of market algorithms, same can be said for many business oriented people. Their meaning of life is cash flow and material acquisition for the sake of acquisition.
