+tanishq vedak Swerving can sometimes avoid a stopped object in a shorter time. Honestly though I think these hypotheticals are ridiculous -- You're right that with proper following distance, the car should be able to stop. Self driving cars are also very well controlled, so they can swerve halfway into another lane, i.e. pull right next to the theoretical bikers if needed.
