I feel like discussion about AI imagery is confused by a dual meaning of 'art': art as pure self-expression, and art as a visual creation. Self-expression happens on its own, but creation of a particular kind can require skill. Once, in art class, everyone was tasked with making an ad for some common amenity. I wanted to draw a victorian-style ad for duct tape, but I did not have the skill to do it. I complained a bit to more artisty friends, and they said: "just draw it?" It felt quite dismissive. If I had tried to draw it, it would not have expressed a victorian style, but an amateur attempt at a victorian style, which was not what I wanted. I was limited in self-expression by a lack of skill. When AI bros talk about 'democratizing art' they're probably appealing to people like me, who want to create the kinds of things they love but cannot because the learning process is arduous. "Boo-hoo, you don't have the commitment and will required to overcome yourself and git gud." Yeah, it sucks to suck.
