It evolved beyond human thinking contraints, coming up with previously unknown winning strategies. Give it the Prime Directive, specify how to play the game of car driving, and let it learn how to use both sensor types to decide what is in front. Birds will bob their heads to determine distance and to recognize objects. Thats biological evolution.
