I see the possibility of a compromise that would avoid a cyberpunk dystopia.
Since automation (and technology in general) makes income-generating assets (i.e. capital) more valuable while making human labor less valuable, let's introduce a higher tax on capital gains, and use the money collected from it to fund a universal basic income program.
There ought to be a natural balance point, where most of the excess capital gains that are enabled by technology will flow into the UBI system, but the CGT would still be low enough to make investing worth it. The more advanced the technology gets, the higher the CGT rate can go to maintain this balance. The theoretical endpoint is a 100% CGT, with absolutely zero human labor needed to keep the economy going - this is the utopia where people no longer have to work, but still can choose to do so for personal fulfillment. If we start at a correct tax rate / UBI amount, the system could get going without really disrupting the social hierarchy, just slightly reducing income inequality and allowing every working-class citizen to work slightly less. As the automation tech improves, the equalizing effect of the redistribution system gradually brings everyone up to the billionaire level of spending power, without taking anything away from existing billionaires.
