As an MLE, I can tell you, it's shameful the MLEs in Tesla agree to let cameras be the only source of information for making decisions in their self driving technology. Cameras can't see through snow, they can't see well in rain, they don't see well at night. Yes, Lidar is expensive. Yes, bearings wear out and they need calibration. There's a lot of problems with lidar, but it's 100% necessary, and I don't think we will ever get past that unless we develop some better sensor technology. Cameras alone will never be enough. Maybe 99% of the time, but 1% failure is too high. And even 0.01% failure rate is too high. Waymo is only successful thanks to over a half dozen lidar sensors. And boy, is it amazing to ride in. I would never trust a tesla in it's current form.
