Yeah, so I'm not so sure that AI generating verbatim copies or even modified copies of GPL code is an obvious violation of the GPL.
I think training on proprietary code is more problematic than triaing on GPL code as GPL clearly allows the end uses to use for any purpose.
Now one caveat could be that the model itself (the weights) is considered a derrivative work... but that seems like a tenuous position to take.
