Truly transformative technology is obvious from the start. People saw the smartphone’s potential immediately and put it to use. The Internet spurred instant economic growth once commercialized. In contrast, Generative AI and LLMs are solutions in search of a problem. Their benefits are unclear, they’re hard to use, and most people do not want them. The expected returns are much lower than investor valuations suggest, and the first public admission from a CEO on an earnings call about disappointing AI results will pop the bubble and send shockwaves through the economy.
