I don't think self driving trucks should be on the road, I don't believe in the tech this people are selling and trying to force on people, but honest to god, who wants to do this work? Who would want to do work like John Henry? Would you choose to destroy your body hammering steel if the government forced the industry back into existence for the sake of having more jobs?
Honestly, the best thing for everyone would probably be to increase the use of trains over trucks for long distance when possible which reduces drivers and is more efficient. That's why I don't buy this tech, we already have the solution that frees up more people, but you can't market a train in silicon valley.
We should be trying to free up as many people as possible so they can have a choice in time spent. There's better things we all could be doing. Put ever unemployed person to work begin paid by the government to do environmental restoration while all long distance hauling is done by fewer people on trains.
