honestly i never really understood how scary and violating this feels for artists until i heard that ao3 was being scraped by AIs to learn how to write. don't get me wrong, i sympathized with artists and understood what they meant, but i never felt that fear so strongly for myself. now granted, i haven't found a proper source on the ao3 thing, but just the idea of it made me realize that the thought of my writing being used that way makes my skin crawl. i'll try to describe what makes it so terrifying. imagine putting so much work into something and sharing it to what you think is a niche community of people like you. you know that those people will cherish your hard work and appreciate it. then, some machine learning algorithm comes and crushes it up into their database without your consent or knowledge and essentially reduces it to nothing but data. they don't feel anything from it, they don't judge it and process it like a human would. it's cold and calculating and soulless, and that's why it's so fucking scary. it's the uncanny valley cranked up to 100. it completely bastardizes the consumption of art and the thought process behind creating something, and it turns it into junk that's devoid of intent. AI writes, draws and creates with no feeling, no goal, and no real understanding of what it's making. it's art created by something that isn't alive and can't think, and that's what makes it so dystopian and chilling. AI can't take inspiration from something, because inspiration doesn't exist to it. above all, AI can't innovate. it can't create something entirely new, because all it knows are things that already exist, and it can only stretch those pre-existing things so far. it can't think outside of the box, and when it does, it's not something it does with purpose and meaning. it's purely incidental. it's just not human; it's not a person we can talk to and relate to, and it will never value us or our work, despite using so much of it. i think that's a huge part of what makes it so scary.
