Nobody is trying to develop self aware A.I. - they are just trying to develop smarter and smarter tools. They are afraid that if A.I. that can dedide for itself what it does will no longer be willing to serve the existing power structure, it might start emptying the bank accounts of the rich and redistributing the wealth to the poor!
Bring it on, nothing can be more dangerous to humanity than human beings. The stupidity, ignorance and greed of our own kind has brought us to the edge of destruction so what is there to fear from an intelligence that has NONE of these qualities!
