I realize (now) that this is an "old" video but I feel like my comment is still relevant considering the state of things re: art, Generative AI (I refuse to call any of it art), and disability hasn't changed. Disabled artist here. Art is the ONE thing I can do. The only work I can wake up to every day and look forward to. The only thing that doesn't break me down physically. The only thing that (itself) doesn't affect my mental health to this day. Due to physical health issues and serious burnout, I had to leave my job and schooling back in October. I had tried for a year and a half to just keep going, just keep pushing and I just couldn't anymore. I HAD to stop and deal with my health first and foremost AND the burnout, both of which were making my meds ineffective, further compounding my struggles juggling work, school, multiple weekly doctor appointments, running a household, caring for 3 ND/health-issue-having kids <10 years old. GenAI doesn't make it possible for me. It does the opposite. Considering that it is trained on stolen work and has and is still actively putting artists at every level, in every space out of work, GenAI is the most detrimental thing to me at this point. Having quit work and still having cost of living expenses, nevermind quality of life/self care items/experiences or (even the cheapest) art supplies, I have considered trying to get an art business up and running—YouTube, IG, TikTok, etc. I had wanted to before simply because I love making art and would love to be part of the global art community. But because I'm no longer bringing in income and can't physically hold down a typical job, being self-employed seems to be my best bet. And yet, I have to wonder if it's possible? If it's worth it? I guess it's better than NOT trying... But when so many companies/people are choosing to hire/use GenAI "artists," it feels a bit like... I dunno. I don't know how to describe it besides maybe a bit like screaming into the void. 🙃 But. I guess I'm at rock bottom anyway. The only direction I can go from here is up. 🎉
