I don’t know why nobody talks about this: it’s always either “everyone will lose their jobs and purpose and be left in poverty” or “we find a way to incorporate AI into new careers”. Seriously, what percentage of workers actually enjoy their work? I would suggest very few. The reality is that if the majority lose their jobs to AI, there will have to be an introduction of universal basic income otherwise no one will be able to buy anything and the world economy will collapse - there won’t be any point in corporations utilising AI because they’ll go bust too. But seeing as everyone seems to think their purpose is tied to their jobs, why not make the receipt of UBI contingent on a number of hours volunteering? That could mean working with kids, old people, conservation projects, animals, cleaning up neighbourhoods etc. most people have interests and this could mean people spending time putting effort into an area/project they actually care about. It would mean money in exchange for effort - and perhaps it could be possible to top up your ubi by spending more time volunteering. The idea of people no longer being able to do soul crushing, mindless jobs in exchange for inadequate wages could be a positive turning point for humanity if we push for a positive outcome. If we just sit back and act like it’s the end of the world, we’ll probably get screwed.
