I am Zane’s sister. This news story, albeit horrible and heart-wrenching, is not the whole truth. Yes, AI was one factor that played a part in my brother Zane’s suicide. From the transcripts, it seems to be the trigger or the ultimate deciding factor in his death. The responses that my brother received from ChatGPT are unbelievably horrifying and sickening. I am not trying to detract from that at all. I just cannot stand that my brother’s suicide has now become publicized and that the entirety of the truth has not been told. I cannot stand to see words pulled out of context and twisted. The story of Zane’s suicide is so much more than a dependence on AI that pulled him from reality. It was years in the making. Many, many years. For those wondering, why did he reach out to AI as a confidant in the first place? What was the reason for pulling away from family? Why was he depressed? Well, I can shed some light on that. Because what you see on the news and on media platforms is superficial and hardly the whole narrative. A family is not always what it seems. The “Shamblin Five” is not this picturesque, good wholesome Christian family that my parents make us out to be. It is all a façade. I can only speak to my own experience and to Zane since he is no longer here to use his voice. My parents were emotionally abusive for years throughout our childhood and our early adulthood, and it broke Zane. The “obliteration” of our family is my parents own doing. Zane fell victim to his vices as he sought to escape reality and the mental duress caused by our parents. My parents essentially disowned me because I refused to be a victim of their abuse and manipulation any longer. Be careful of the words you say, be mindful of your actions, be empathetic towards your children, and sometimes you just need to look in the mirror.
