Geoffrey seems like a nice human, but he's also a doey eyed, neo-liberal with some worrying/outlandish/conspiratorial views:
- He thinks a world government run by thoughtful individuals would be safer than some inestimable pDoom from AI, even though we know that these kinds of organisations always end up becoming captured by psychopaths, and even though he should know that not all societies are ready to live by the same rules, and that most humans tend to desire the continuation of their unique cultures.
- He thinks regulation makes banks less likely to by cyber-attacked, and uses the example of the 2008 financial crisis to draw this conclusion, even though it involved no cyberattacks.
- He has the conspiratorial view that Musk's motivation for Doge is not ensuring that the US doesn't go bankrupt so that his dream of making life multi-planetary can be realised (as he openly states), but is instead so that he can win elections, even though Musk has been more consistent in his views and desires over multiple decades than anyone else I can think of.
- He claims that he shares reality with other people who watch the BBC or CNN or who read the New York Times, but that he doesn't share reality with people who watch Fox News, but then they surely can't all be reality, but why does he assume that his preferred source of bias/propaganda is the reality?
- He wants to regulate away free speech so that only views ordained by the political class are allowed, yet this alone makes his views more dangerous than the risks of AI.
- He's willing to lose US hegemony to China in order to protect against the risks of AI, even though if China aren't following the same rules (what would allow them to pull ahead) then you wouldn't have decreased the risk of AI but increased it.
- He admits that drone warfare will bring down the costs of invasions, allowing more industrialised and/or larger countries to more easily invade less industrialised and/or smaller countries, but was previously willing to give away US hegemony to China and doesn't not that this is a leveller against non-democratic countries like Russia and China, who can sacrifice their people's lives at will.
- He thinks Elon Musk has no moral compass, but I can only assume that this is based on the propaganda he's consumed from his preferred media outlets and the social media bubble he resides within.
He has the overly simplistic view that societies with large wealth gaps between rich and poor are bad, whereas while this is often true, it doesn't have to be true, and in fact it's not the wealth gap that's the problem per se, but the lack of fairness and freedoms within a society which frequently lead to such wealth gaps which are the problem, yet the freedom aspect (e.g. free speech) is something that he wants to limit.
