This makes me wonder (and only wonder because i don't need the rabbit hole) how many people during the industrial revolution realized how sick things like coal and lead made them. How many people lived in silence or were shut down for being critical not of the progress that was made, but how it was being used and what the secondary consequences were. Luddites classically weren't just "anti-technology" if what I have read was anything to go by.
I think this conversation was great to listen to, but it also emphasizes my ongoing problem which is conflating AI and machine learning BROADLY with generative AI specifically. These massive data centers aren't being used to study cancer or track weather patterns... they're being made to read and write people's emails... to post, view, and reply to content online... to do things that are not just needless but result in incestuous training data. Older information is dying because of forums being shut down in favor of chatrooms. Art galleries are being flooded by people who have never picked up a paintbrush or stylus. I don't want AGI to feel human if in the process we lose our own humanity.
