Unfortunately for us Driverless cars and trucks will eventually be the norm and make the roads safer if the majority of cars and trucks are the same. Until that time comes a couple of decades from now, we need humans to drive the trucks and cars. Some of that technology is already here with lane departure and collision avoidance technology the rest is coming. The fully autonomous vehicle for some time yet should still need a human at the very least as a backup. There will be issues for mechanics and drivers who will need to calibrate and replace defective parts to keep them running. What is the MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) for the various components in the field and under what operating conditions? At what cost? who will be needed to repair them and what training will be needed? A craftsman toolbox on the side of the road won't work anymore especially with these fully computerized machines. Who will fuel or recharge them if electric? all of these things need to be answered.
