Penrose had a brilliant career but he’s out of his depth. Intelligence does not require consciousness. Current AI is very obviously intelligent. It lacks agency and true creativity in addition to consciousness, but these systems are highly intelligent and thus extremely useful. Millions of people use AI to do work every day, including basic scientific research.
