image generators generate something that kinda looks like a dog if you squint at it. LLMs are the same way. They write sentences that sound like they would fit there. Like if it was writing the script for a movie. There is no care for truth, no knowledge about truth, and an LLM doesn't think. It just generates text that is grammatically correct and if you squint at it looks like what a real sentence would look like in that place. Meaning if it writes case law, it would cite something that sounds like it would exist. It doesn't look anything up, it doesn't lie, it doesn't tell the truth, it just generates text that looks right. Without external features that can be triggered by the LLM (like web search that we have now), it's just like the dog picture but text.
