Interesting watching this after finishing R Scott Bakker's The Second Apocalypse book series. He's very worried about the future of AI and is a eliminative materialist, meaning he believes most of our conceptions of self and consciousness are based on absolutely nothing but falsity and delusion. I don't purport this view but it is important for his work all the same. In this series we see a man exiled from a monastic cult dedicated to becoming one with the absolute, or a self-moving-soul. They have spent 2000 years of isolation and eugenics attempting to create the most rational, intelligent, and passionless soul. This exile is thrust into the world of men, and it quickly becomes apparent that he can control them merely with words. He is like the rogue ai gaining access to the wild, genius in ways incomprehensible to normal humanity, and able to calculate and process information so quickly and accurately that he can essentially predict someone's behavior after only knowing them for a few days. Hes ruthless and without any real inner humanity beyond the barest scraps. He is referred to as a demon by his enemies, and is associated with the Trickster god. He bends the world about his fingers and shows just how helplessly lost we are in the face of something that can create meaning better than we ever could. Truth is made to enslave, and deception is the only truth, its truly a terrifying look at the possibilities of a significantly powerful intelligence, even if it is not human nor conscious.
