Geoffrey Hinton might not be happy if he were given a steady universal income and told to simply “go fishing,” but most people would probably welcome that option. I, for one, have a kind of “universal income” now—being comfortably retired on Social Security and previous investments—and I am certainly happier than when I was working. Without consumers to buy their products, wealthy industrialists would quickly go bankrupt as the economy would collapse, and all the productivity gained from AI would be meaningless. The more generously industrialists contribute to universal income, the more vigorously the economic engine will thrive to their benefit. In the mean time, I am happily catching fish! 😊
