To achieve that level of intelligence they need a lot of resources and money which only one person or company cannot invest or cannot profit from a business point of view. If they don't care about the money and just keep on improving then we really don't have much time but if they are looking this as a business then we have a lot of time.
You can check when ChatGPT was new they enabled advanced features and stuffs for the hype and trend and to create a buzz but after that buzz was created now we can see the degradation on performance because they need resource to operate and by resource, I mean a lot of resources. Even microaoft alone couldn't make OpenAI profitable or benefit from it within the next 5-7 years but they know that in the long run it will pay off but not now.
